Do you ever look at another teacher’s curriculum and think…”I’m not doing it right!” Or do you ever look at your students during what we thought was an awesome lesson and they are like…”huh, what, I don’t get it!” Well, I am here to tell you, I have, MANY TIMES!!!

In the last year, I have finally come to terms with the fact that NOT everyone’s curriculum is going to be the same.  I was getting my undies in a bunch because my lessons weren’t like so-and-so’s.  Quite frankly, I don’t understand what all the hub-bub is about?  Here’s the thing about health curriculum, wait for it…wait for it…


IT’S ABOUT THE NEEDS OF OUR STUDENT’S! While we have state and/or national standards to guide our curriculum, we get to teach our students based on what they need.  Not long ago, I decided to focus more on the mental and emotional aspects of health because we had an increasing number of high school students taking their own lives. Whether it was students being conflicted about their sexuality or suffering from a mental illness, students needed to know what mental illness is, what it looks like and what the signs and symptoms are that are associated with it.

This is not to say that the other components of health such as physical activity and nutrition were not important anymore, but there was a decrease of focus on that in my classroom based on the community and needs of the students in that moment.

What I am saying is, “every curriculum is going to be different, because it should be suited for what is best for the students.” NOT necessarily what everyone else is doing.

Take a look at your community, take a look at what your students need, take a look at how your current curriculum fits those needs.  With curriculum, there is always a beautiful beach at the end of the bridge, you just have to be willing to travel over it to get there!
